Random mix tapes rule, malls are fun, and circuit city employees are dumb.

OK, I have a few statements that need to be made

Statement #1.) mix cd’s made by someone you don’t know and handed down to you rule.

Statement #2.) malls are very much like medieval marketplaces in Europe ( including the random gypsies that try to rip you off.)

Statement #3) if you ever feel down in life, go to a mall. You will feel better.

Statement #4.) If you want to feel any better go to a huge electronics store and try to buy a pair of speakers.

So I got my car fixed today and I was feeling kinda bummed because I’m officially poor again after receiving the biggest paycheck I have ever gotten. I hopped into my accord after doing a few laps around the pep boys building( to ease the pain of getting rammed in the ass, naturally) And I popped a cd in that my brother had given me that was made by a friend of his. This cd turned out to be a semi-satirical album of songs to....um…….err…………..hide the salami with. So I drive to the mall listening to Barry white, prince, I’m to sexy by right said Fred….fucking a!!! and some awesome weird techno ( by far one of the best driving songs I have ever heard by the way, imagine me doing the night at the Roxbury head bobbing... Yeah classic right?) Hence statement number one ( more on this statement later.)

I get to the mall, forgetting that it is mid nov, so the fucking thing is packed tight. Find a parking spot the next city over and walk in, planning to buy a DVD. Go to FYE, nothing…..crap……go to best buy……nothing….damnit, go to suncoast.. nothing again. I am starting to get mildly disappointed but I always feel better when I am in a mall, just being around all of the loser teens that live there and watching people throw away there money puts some kind of sadistic joy in my heart I guess. ( statement number three proven.)

So onto statement two ( ignore the fact that I proved three first……..that’s an organizational error….not my fault I swear!) I came to this conclusion right before the gypsy tried to rip me off.)I looked at all the stores and the booths and the people and I got to thinking how a mall is very similar to a marketplace ( who would have thought that? I thought it was a place to meet chicks and make fun of people.) So I looked at all the kiosks as little shops and was having a merry old’ time wandering around the mall…this is when she struck. Now I’m not sure why she struck. Maybe its because I’m so devilishly handsome that she couldn’t keep away but I doubt that. Working in retail for many years has given me something of an eye for people so I know that she saw me as an easy mark. Early twenties, no ring, kinda scruffy looking. She figured she could get my thirty nine dollars and ninety nine cents. Well she was wrong! She walks up. To me

Her: ( in this sooo obviously fake European accent, and I know…I fucking love accents.)
“ do you want to see something amazing?”

Me ( always up for amazing things.) sure, why not?

This was my first mistake

So she proceeds to grab my arm and walk me over to her little shop, marketplace ,etc. and begins to buffer, and when I say buffer I mean with all the intensity she can muster up my finger( ring on the right hand) and she’s talking to me. I can barely understand a damn word she’s saying cause of her fake accent……and she keeps asking me questions about how I like it and what smell I like better. Making sure to keep everything an open ended question….leaving me no escape.( she was good real good. In fact I envy that kind of skill in sales to be perfectly honest.) so after about twenty minutes of my one finger being buffered and me being badgered she goes.

Her: so how many would you like?

I was floored! This had to be one of the best sales presentations I have ever heard. She was good, real good.

But she wasn’t getting my money, oh no.

Me: no thank you, I really cant afford something like this at the moment.

Her: but I haven’t told you how much they were

FUCK!

Me: well how much are they?

Her- thirty nine ninety nine and you get the ( cant remember exactly what it was) for free.

Me: I’m sorry I only have twenty dollars and I have something in mind I need to pick up.

Her: well for you ill knock it down to fifteen

Me: I’m sorry I really can’t

Then. She does the pouty lip! The fucking pouty lip……I had to run…….

So that was my third statement. On two the fourth. I left the mall disappointed because I was still DVD less, so I figured id go to the brand new circuit city that opened up last week. They are sure to be carrying a DVD by a band that not a whole lot of [people know about and fewer like! It seamed brilliant…I felt warm and fuzzy inside. And then I walked in. it was set up like every other best buy/circuit city out there so I wasn’t really amazed or anything. I walked into the DVD section and of course, they didn’t have it. So I was mildly sad so I felt that I should see what else they have, and working in a smaller Consumer electronic chain and coming from the other monster chain I have a lot of fun walking around and listening to the employees talk to people. It’s another one of my sad little habits, but it never went to the point that this one did.

DISCLAIMER: THIS NEXT PORTION HAS MANY TECHY GEEKY WORDS AND MAKES ME SEEM LIKE AN ARROGANT PRICK. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE THIS PART OF ME,PLEASE DO NOT READ ON.

I wander around the store and finally end up in the home audio portion of the store One rule I have come up with about shopping my competition is that if there are a lot of customers or if they are busy don‘t bug them, it’s a comment courtesy that I have, these guys were dead. Its game time.

First off I want to comment on the selection of products and how I felt upon entering the department, because I feel that that is very important. The section is tucked neatly away in the back corner of the store in a land far away from every other department, and all of there home theater systems are set up in this little recessed area. It was kind of nifty, but every time I turned one on I had two others blaring at me. I get tired of playing with the one infinity set up and the one Polk set up they had so I walked over to where the inwall speakers were. At this point one of the salesreps has rap blaring, so loud its uncomfortable. I walk past him and down an isle. He contacts me ( a monumental feat considering I had been in there for about half an hour and he was the first person to even say hi, I had to track down someone in the DVD department.)

Him( in an amazingly thick Jamaican accent) Can I help you?

Me; maybe, I’m looking for some speakers.

Him off like a rocket

Him: well den dis ere is what you want!

( he points me to a Bose 3.2.1 gs ii system)

It will play anyting you want, DVD, cd, and all out of these two speakers.

Me; all I’m going to be using this for is music, no DVD.

Him: ok den, (walks me over to the bose 201 shelf speakers.) dese here are the best, the sound good ( cranks up the rap.) see?

Me: not really, I have room for bigger speakers

( he looks confused)

Just then one of the other employees comes up to him with a question about remotes……he couldn’t answer, but I used this as a chance to walk back over to the systems again. I started to fiddle around with a Harmon karden receiver and some infinity speakers.

He walks back over

Me: can I listen to just these speakers?

( pointing at the infinities.)

Him: sure!

Plays around with the receiver for a full five minutes before any sound comes out. So I look over the faq tag and see its abbreviation before every driver. And I ask him what it stands for. He has no idea and runs to the computer to check. Another employee walked over.

Me: can you turn the sub woofer off? I really just want to hear these two speakers.

Rep#2 : sure

Muddles with the receiver for a few minutes and finally turns it off.
I listen for a few seconds. The rep #1 comes back in and starts yelling over the music.

Rep #1: It helps with the bass.

Me: really?

#1: yup

Me: Then why is it on every driver?

He looks confused again, I drop it.

So I ask them if I could hear the polks that are next to it.

Rep #1 keeps telling me about how good they sound in surround sound while rep #2 fiddles with the reciever…..I reiterate to rep #1 that I am only going to be using this for music. I look back and rep#2 is in the speaker set up and instead of turning the sub off he just turns the db level down as far as itll go, it still rumbles but not too much. So I give up. Listen for a few more seconds. Thank them both for there time and left. I sat in my car and laughed my ass off for about ten minutes before I tunred the car on. Statement #4 done. I turn the car on and that damn fine techno song starts again. I bob my head and drive off…..then….the village people, macho man, and then the topper. What ended my night, the perfect send off, van halen hot for teacher……..Random mix tapes rule, malls are fun, and circuit city employees are dumb. that’s all.
